Girl Scouts can build their filmmaking skills through the GSGI Virtual Film Lab, a series of free, self-paced programs designed to guide girls step-by-step through the creative process. Participants can choose from three fun options—or complete them all: Filmmaking Basics, Claymation, and Stop Motion.
Each program is completely online and includes instructional videos that girls can complete on their own or with their troop. After signing up, participants receive an email with the program link and instructions. Every Girl Scout who completes a program earns a Virtual Film Lab patch* and can submit their film creations to the GSGI Film Festival!
*Patches will be mailed to participants at the end of May 2026.
Program Options:
- Filmmaking Basics: Perfect for beginners, this program covers the fundamentals of filmmaking. Girl Scouts will learn about basic video production, camera angles, lighting, and sound. This program is ideal for girls who want a strong foundation before creating and submitting their own film.
- Claymation: Discover the art of Claymation through this digital program! Girl Scouts will create a clay character, build a story, and learn simple animation techniques to produce their own Claymation video.
- Stop Motion: Discover how everyday objects can become movie stars! This program introduces Girl Scouts to stop motion animation using toys, drawings, or household items. Girls will learn how to plan scenes, capture frames, and edit them together to create smooth motion and engaging stories.
These virtual programs make it easy for Girl Scouts anywhere in Greater Iowa to explore creativity, learn new skills, and tell their stories—at their own pace and with the chance to share them at the Film Festival. 🎬✨
Support is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Iowa Arts Council, which exists within the Iowa Economic Development Authority.
